Casio EXilim EX-Z35 Digital Camera The price/capabilities ratio is right for a first time digital camera owner and many other photo nuts. A t 3.9" (W) x 2.3" (H) x 0.8" (D) and weighing in at 4.6 OZ with battery and memory card the Casio Exilim EX-Z35 is a good way to start your digital camera life. The list price is $109.00 but an instant rebate of $10.00 as shown on the Casio website makes it a friendlier $99.00. Does it do the job? Let’s take a look.
Many new cameras are giving you more Megapixels at lower prices. The EX-Z35 is no slouch in that department with a 12.1 Megapixel sensor. The 3X optical zoom is about right. Digital and optical combine to give you 12X zoom. Use the Digital Zoom if you have a tripod or find something else to steady the camera on. I also use the Anti Shake function and that does help some. The View Screen (Monitor) is 2.5 inch TFT Color LCD that performs well in most conditions. Direct sunlight is a problem if you need to change settings. This is an issue with many cameras. The combination of super bright sunlight and wearing dark sunglasses made for hit or miss shooting during the Air Show. I got many shots with sky and no Airplanes.
I have come to love the one button video access. It really makes it easy to do a quick switch from stills to video (16:9 aspect ratio). If you want to record for YouTube that option is also easily available.
Casio has added an Easy Mode that limits the settings to just image size, flash on/off and the self timer on a simple menu screen. This does help people get started with a few settings rather than becoming brain numbed when they see the full menu of options available. I seldom use Face Detection but it can help improve focus on important faces. The Best Shot button continues to be an easy way to tell the camera what you are shooting by matching one of 23 icons of on screen options with your current condition. The camera makes the correct settings and you get the good shot.
I have posted two almost identical Video tests on YouTube. One was taken in Standard Casio mode and a second using the Casio YouTube mode found under Best Shot. Take a look and you will really see a big difference in the rendition. There are also over 200 photos and some videos on Flickr for you to view. Note my fingers in some of the shots.

I have tested thinner lighter cameras but as far as capability versus price point I like the Casio Exilim EX-Z35. It does the job without breaking the bank.
