Samsung Impression SGH-A877- (AT&T)
My first feeling about the Samsung Impression SGH-A877 was “Another touch screen phone with a slide out QWERTY keyboard!” After using the Impression for two weeks I find much to like about it. It is a great texting phone with easy access to a number messaging services. The Touch Screen is a very workable 3.2 inches and is one of the brightest I have seen. The slider QWERTY keyboard is broad with raised keys for a good tactile feel. The virtual touch keyboards, whether horizontal or vertical, are also easy to work with. Weighing in at 5.3 ounces and a not too big 4.48x2.28x .61 inch package the Samsung Impression For AT&T is a World Phone that is solid to hold and fun to work with.
On the other hand the Touch screen picked up my greasy fingerprints and needed to be cleaned frequently. For some reason there is no voice command capability. The lock/unlock button is on the right side of the phone at the center of the slide out QWERTY keyboard. This caused some difficulty when attempting to unlock the phone. Press the button and the slider moves. You need to hold the phone firmly so no Slider movement is possible and then press the lock button. The memory card must be installed under the SIM by removing the back of the phone. This was not difficult just annoying. The Impression can handle memory cards up to 16GB. I did not have to remove the battery so that was a plus.
AT&T costs from their site: No Commitment Pricing $399.99 2-yr Contract Price $249.99 Mail-in Rebate via AT&T Promotion Card - $50.00 Price After Mail-in Rebate $199.99
At the bottom of the Touch screen are three icons: Dial, Contacts, and Menu. Below these, on the phone case, are three keys: Talk/Send, Back, and Power/End. Below those is the microphone. On the left side of the phone are the Multitask and Volume keys. On the right side are The Lock key and the Camera key.
Music, Video, and Photos Camera
Although the 3 MP camera produces very good daylight pictures it is limited in low or even medium light as it has no flash. The Zoom at 3X digital is minimal but OK when lighting is good. Video Share was tested with a comparable phone and performed well. More photos on my Flickr site.
Music If you are a music fan you will have to use an adaptor (not included) or buy a Samsung headset that fits the proprietary connector. (not included) Of course you could also use your own Bluetooth headset. AT&T seems to have a good selection of songs available for purchase and download. Sound was good with my Bluetooth headset. I did do a direct copy and paste from My Music to the Music folder on the Memory card and all transferred and played fine. If you have tunes with copyright protections this may not be the case.
PC STUDIO You can synchronize your music, photos, and videos with your PC, edit your phone’s photos, download videos, and add playlists for your music. The PC Studio software does the job but has a learning curve.
Battery Suggested battery talk time about 3 hours and standby up to 250 hours seemed low on the talk time and a little high on the standby time.
Mobile Email AOL, Yahoo, Windows Live, AT&T Yahoo.
Messaging Text Messaging Instant Messaging (IM)AOL®, Windows Live and Yahoo!® Messenger M Windows Live was perfect after setup
Widget Bar and Main Menu
The Widget Bar is hidden on the left side of the home screen. Once visible Widgets can be dragged out from the banner of Widget Icons and opened on the screen. You will have to decide which of these are helpful to you. I found a number of them worked well for me.
The Samsung Impression for AT&T is a very easy to use texting phone with many messaging capabilities. The Touch Screen is quite usable. The other on-board capabilities make this a fine phone. With a two year contract its cost is a little high unless all the texting and email capabilities are truly what you need. If you are more of a photo/video taker you might want to check out those phones with a higher pixel camera and flash. Overall I liked the Samsung Impression. The positive parts of the experience by far outweighed the negatives.
