T-Mobile Memoir from Samsung Is it a Phone with a camera or a Camera with a phone?
Looking at the back of the T-Mobile Memoir from Samsung (SGH-t929) you would swear it is a stand alone camera. Turn it over and it looks and performs like most touch screen phones. I would not consider it a Smartphone but it does have many features and performs quite well. (Dimension (HXWXD): 4.17” x 2.11” x 0.55”)
The included 8 MegaPixal camera is a great move up the scale for cell phone use. With a suggested retail price of 499.99 and a $249.99 final cost after an instant discount of $200.00 and a mail-in rebate of $50.00 this is not a budget phone. That offer also requires a two year contract.

Camera (Since this is what really caught my eye) The 8MP camera produces much clearer photos than any previous phones I have worked with. There is a flash that improves low light shots when fairly close-up. The flash can be on, soft, or off. The camera does have setup options that include GPS tracking, Scene, Resolution, White Balance, Effects, Focus, ISO, Image Quality, Exposure Meter, Anti-Shake, Blink Detection, as well as adjust Contrast, Saturation, and Sharpness. Other options include Zoom, Camera or Video (no Flash or light with video), shooting mode, time delay, and brightness. GPS locating is available within the camera functions. As you can see this is a camera with many features. To see photos and videos click here to go to my Flickr site.
Touch Screen
The touch screen is very sensitive to input. It performed as well as any I have seen. The left side of the screen has a list of options (14) called Widgets. Only 6 can be displayed at a time. Flick the list to see the rest. These can be used where they sit or be dragged to the open area of the screen. Most will open easily without dragging. The Widget bar can be hidden by touching the Widget tab.

There are 4 four buttons at the bottom of the touch screen for the Phone, Phone Book, Web, and Menu. Touching MENU fills the screen with twelve (12) Icons. Some of these seem to be duplicates of the Widgets or do the same functions. Some Widgets do not appear here. This can be a little confusing. For instance the Widget that looks like a camera with photos under it opens a rectangle that gives access to a number of Services related to cameras like Flickr, Kodak Gallery, Photobucket, Snapfish, etc. This area also has an icon that takes you to the camera so you can use it. Touching the MENU icon at the lower right of the screen opens the 12 icon Menu list. Touching the Camera Icon here takes you directly to the camera. Pressing the camera button on the top right of the phone, when held horizontally, takes you directly to the Camera without any other effort. This is the easiest way to get to the camera.
One example is the Weather Widget. Enter any Zip Code and get basic weather for that area. Click the arrow in that Widget and get today plus the next two days of weather from the Weather Channel. Flick it back to the left side and the current temperature is displayed all the time
There is an Auto Lock option for the entire phone that can be turned off and on in the Setup area. It should be left on unless you are doing lots of work and moving between the phone and other items. Like a Telephone directory. Otherwise it will be locked every time you go back to the phone. Since I carry the phone in my pocket I always have the Auto Lock function ON.
Below the touch screen are three buttons, Answer, Back, and End/Off. They perform the usual functions.
Adding Contacts, Email, and Texting E-mail address setup is not directly on the Phone Number contact list. By touching one of the five icons at the top of the Create Contact area you can add 4 E-mail addresses as well as Instant message addresses AIM, ICQ, Windows Live, and Yahoo. The other four icons allow you to add the usual info for contacts plus a personal ringtone, Birthday and anniversary, and a person’s complete address. When I setup my Yahoo mail account I was able to access my yahoo address book but I like having the email accessible in contacts as well. I was able to use Yahoo.com as if I were at my desktop. I had fun using the picture/text messaging function. I used the recipient’s cell phone number to e-mail those. That worked fine. I did find the horizontal keyboard keys a little close together for my fingers. A stylus might work better. Texting was never an issue. Message types available are; Audio postcard, Text Messages, Picture Messages, Voice Note, E-mail, Instant Messaging and Broadcast Messages (depending on your SIM.) Audio Postcard is a fun feature. You select a frame, take a picture and then record a voice message up to one minute long. Then send it as an Audio Postcard. SEE SAMPLE (Audio not accessible here) BELOW:
Bluetooth worked well with sound and file moving. For the most part I used the USB cable connected to the Lenovo R-400 ThinkPad loaner to add/move music, video, and photos. I paired the Memoir Phone with the LG Handsfree car unit and it worked perfectly.
Storage It took me a while to find the function that allows you to change storage of files, photos, video, etc. from phone memory to the MicroSD card. That function is buried inside the setup features for the camera along with the GPS on/off feature. However memory status is easily checked. The T-Mobile Memoir from Samsung can accept MicroSD cards up to 16GB.
Music Player The sound is quite good using the included Stereo Headset or with a Bluetooth one. The player itself is fairly simple. If you more interested in music than a camera you might want to look elsewhere. However 16GB will hold a bunch of songs.
The T-Mobile Memoir from Samsung (SGH-t929) has many more functions than I could cover here. It is a good phone with plenty of capability. The camera is excellent. If a camera is high on your list this is the phone for you. If you want a Smartphone for heavy business use this is not the phone for you. This camera showed me how good a Camera Phone can be.
