Trulink Wireless USB to VGA with integrated audio Kit Model 29598
I have written about Cables to Go products in the past but nothing quite as interesting as this. While at CES 2010 I met with their rep and he sent me several boxes. When I opened them I found a number of products that, when all connected properly, would allow me to send photos, videos, audio, and other stuff stored on the Lenovo ThinkPad R400 to my Samsung Flat Screen TV using a wireless connection. In other words be able to share travels, visits to the kids, and such on the bigger better screen from up to 30 feet away (line of site) without wires all over the floor. I have to admit that I failed this effort. I guess there were just too many parts and too little technical knowledge on my part.
Cables to Go did not give up. They sent me a different product. The TruLink Wireless USB to VGA with integrated audio Kit. Since it had fewer parts this was much easier to setup, install and run. As a matter of fact it was fun!
List price: $299.99
MUCH IN THE BOX: Wireless USB host adapter for your computer • Wireless VGA With Integrated Audio adapter for your display • Two dipole antennas • One 3ft USB A male to Mini-b male cable • One 1ft HD15 VGA male to male cable • One 3ft 3.5mm male to male cable • One 3ft 3.5mm male to Two RCA male cable • One 5V 2.5A power adapter • One USB extender with cradle • One mounting bracket • Two self-tapping screws • Quick Start Guide • Driver CD • User Manual
I first installed the software from the included CD on the R400 ThinkPad. After that I just had to carefully follow the instructions for connecting the main unit (with antenna) to the Samsung Flat screen and the Wireless Dongle with another antenna to the Lenovo Laptop. There is one point where the wireless mating needs to be done, After that it worked on the first try. When the R400 was turned on its Desktop appeared on the Samsung TV. The TV and the ThinkPad were about 18 feet apart with a good line of sight. Using the ThinkPad mouse and/or the Touchpad, I moved from my Desktop to My Pictures and clicked through a number of them. The screen produced good easily viewed photos. I also started Photoshop and edited several photos. This showed me the Trulink Wireless USB to VGA with integrated audio Kit to demo could be used to teach classroom style.
I then tested my videos. I found them to have some issues. These consisted of some breaking up of the video and sound crackling. Reading the FAQ for the TruLink I found this could be corrected by changing some settings in the software. That did improve things but not completely. A little more fiddling or a call to support would most likely fix this issue.
There are many ways the Trulink Wireless USB to VGA with integrated audio Kit can be used for fun, instruction, conferences, or just sharing information with an audience. I no longer have to drag people into my tiny office to see photos on a small screen.
I am glad the Cables to Go and TruLink did not give up on my not so nimble brain. Their latest TruLink Wireless USB to VGA with integrated audio Kit Model 29598 is not only a winner in my book but won a 2010 Innovations award during CES. I now understand why.
